JERSEY BEEKEEPERS'
ASSOCIATION
Membership
Welcome to our community.
If you chose the JBKA and BBKA membership option, after your details have been added to the BBKA membership system you will begin to receive the monthly BBKA magazine, this may take 4 to 6 weeks to start depending on their posting runs.
You will also start to receive information by email from our Secretary with updates on events and the Associations activities, all are welcome to these regardless of experience.
Some of the events are held at the Bee Field, where the Association are planning to erect a purpose-built HQ.
There are several hives on the site, a new ‘off grid’ shed with an observation area where pre-arranged organised visitor groups can watch beekeepers inspecting hives. The Bee Field also has a couple of small ponds, a small orchard, pollinator patch’s and a ‘Beekeepers Garden’, forming part of our sustainable environment ethics.
As an association, subject to demand, we offer education courses as an introduction to beekeeping each year, also certified courses held by BBKA examiners. All these courses come with a fee which we advertise out to the membership during the year, we also offer study groups for those taking exams on the lead up.
We have a selection of items for hire including honey extraction equipment and steamers, we also sell honey jars and lids in 1 and 1/2lb sizes at reduced rates to members. As we have membership of Genuine Jersey, we also have ‘Genuine Jersey’ tamper proof labels for jars available.
If you are interested in obtaining colonies of bees, we have a swarm list you can be added to. Prerequisites for this are you already have a hive ready for housing bees in a suitable position and would be available to accept a swarm when one is available, which can be a challenge as we do not know the bees timetables! There are also beekeepers in Jersey who you can purchase colonies from when available.
If you do start to keep bees please remember It is a legal requirement for anyone who owns a hive with bees, or a hive which has at any time contained a colony of bees, to register with the Department of the Environment. The owner of the hive must inform the department by completing a registration form within 28 days of becoming a hive owner.
